The event takes place in the Morrill Meeting Room of Curtis Memorial Library, Wednesday, December 13 at 7 pm.
Among the most primitive of all vertebrate species, the sea lamprey is a parasitic fish native to the northern and western Atlantic Ocean. Due to their similar body shapes, lampreys are sometimes inaccurately called "lamprey eels," but they are actually more closely related to sharks! In Maine, sea lamprey are one of our native anadromous fish. They are no longer parasitic as they ascend Maine rivers to spawn. After several years in freshwater habitats the larvae return to the sea, where they prey on a wide variety of fish. Scientists sequenced the genome for this intriguing species in 2013 and found it may serve as a model for developmental biology and evolution studies.
Dr. Steve Coghlan
Dr. Coghlan is an Associate Professor of Freshwater Fisheries Ecology at University of Maine in Orono. He joined the faculty of the Wildlife Ecology Department in September 2006, with research interests encompassing individual- and community-level processes relating to applied fisheries ecology and management. Coghlan is working closely with state and federal agencies in building a collaborative research program around issues important to the ecology and management of Maine’s freshwater fish and aquatic habitats.
FOMB hosts their Winter Speaker Series October-May, the second Wednesday of each month. Their January 10th presentation, A Tale of Three Privies, features historic archaeologist Lee Cranmerpreceded by the FOMB Annual Meeting and potluck, all at the Cram Alumni House of Bowdoin College in Brunswick. The public is welcome at the 6 pm. meeting and dinner, with the presentation to follow at 7 pm. All Speaker Series events are free, open to the public and supported by Patagonia, Inc. in Freeport.
